The Global Editors Network and Google want to: - Award the editorial excellence of data-journalism - Contribute to set the standards of data-journalism - Promote data journalism among editors and media executives - Enhance the collaboration between journalists, developers and designers - Set up the first international event focusing on data-journalism.  |
| Data Journalism approach |
| GEN considers there is a data-journalism “product”, “story” or “application” if there is a combination of: – database driven service – database programming – data vizualization – reporting and/or investigative journalism – interaction or collaboration with users – mobile usage or mobile data gathering – newsgaming. The data-journalism items accepted for the DJ Awards can be produced by a team or by individuals but they have to include a minimum of three elements mentioned above. In any case, the International Jury will decide who can apply (see below). |

| As the DJA’s goal is to contribute to set the standards of this emerging journalistic form, to support and promote this form of "new journalism" towards professional audiences, the 2012 Data Journalism Awards are designed for existing media companies or non-profit organizations or platforms which successfully launched new services based on data journalism (from July 2011 to March 2012). |
| The Data Journalism Prizes |
| It will reward the best examples of data journalism published in a media (print, online or broadcast) from May 2011 to April 2012. A jury of experts and editors will grant 3 awards (3 categories): – data-driven investigations – interactive data-visualizations – data-driven mobile or web applications / services. Two sub categories will be defined for national and international media organisations and for regional and hyperlocal organisations. Six First Prizes will be given during the awards ceremony. |

| Six Prizes will be given during the Awards ceremony. Each winner - media companies, non-profit organizations, platforms or individuals - will receive US$ 10,000. An Award can be shared by different individuals. |
| Process for the DJ Awards |
| - Companies, organizations or individuals must apply through the dedicated website (www.datajournalismawards.com) – A first selection will be done by GEN and GEN partners, as pre-jury. – The Awards will be granted by the international jury (3 categories x 2 sub-categories) during the 2012 News World Summit on 30 May 2012. |

| Schedule in 2011- 2012 |
The DJ Awards have been launched at the News World Summit in Hong Kong from 27 to 30 November 2011 The DJ Awards will take place in Paris during the News World Summit 2012 at the opening gala dinner on 30 May 2012. Presentations of winners will happen during the NEWS! Summit on 1 June 2012 in a specific session. 29 November 2011: – launching of the Awards during the 2011 NEWS! Summit December 2011: – constitution of the pre-jury, which will short-list the applying projects January 2012: – launching of the dedicated website (www.datajournalismawards.org) – first meeting of the jury February – April 2012: – Promotion of the DJ Awards – Final selection for the Awards May 2012: – Meeting of the jury: designation of winners for the Awards Wednesday 30 May gala dinner: – DJ Awards given during the first gala dinner of the 2012 NEWS!
