Mediafin won the hackdays in Brussels, with RTBF receiving an honourable mention from the jury. The VRT in Brussels was the latest newsroom to host the Editors Lab Hack days, organized by the Global Editors Network with support from Google. Seven teams competed to build the most innovative news-driven mobile app, or digital content, around the theme:
New Tools for the newsroom of the future. Dashboards, smart boards, multimedia walls for monitoring breaking news, current and the conversation with the audience.
Mediafin built a dashboard dubbed 'Talking dashboard', displaying real time and automated analysis of financial markets with clever widgets that visualize all the events and charts behind the fluctuation of the stocks, the winners and losers of the day, as well as the gut feelings of both analysts and investors.
Preparatory masterclasses, for the teams, was given by Jelle-Jan Bruinsma, Manager Content Partnerships YouTube Benelux and Nordics, and Damien Van Achter, Digital Sherpa, Co-founder of Nest_up, and Professor at IHECS and Sciencespo.
The winning project was determined by a panel jury, to include Damien Van Achter, Digital Sherpa. Co-founder of Nest_up. Professor at IHECS; Stijn Debrouwere, Mozilla Knight Open News Fellow and Antoine Laurent, Deputy Director, GEN. The winning team - Mediafin - will be invited to take part in the 'International Hackathon' GEN Barcelona Summit 2014, to compete against the winners of the twenty national Hackdays being hosted throughout the world since September 2013.
