Frank Schirrmacher has been co-publisher of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung since 1994. He joined the FAZ as editor of the feuilleton (literature and arts section) in 1985, then from 1989 to 1994 was Head of the editorial literature and literary life. He has written several best-selling books and has received many prizes and honours including the Golden Pen, the Jacob Grimm Prize for the German language, and the Fundació Catalunya prize for his ‘promotion of liberalism’. It was in an interview with Schirrmacher in 2006 that Nobel-laureate Günter Grass admitted to have served in the Waffen-SS as a young man. Newsweek has named Mr Schirrmacher one of the leading Germans of the 21st Century.
