The Editors Lab programme is a worldwide series of Hackdays. Sponsored by our strategic partners Google and Yahoo, these Hackdays are hosted by some of the world’s leading news organisations (The New York Times, The Guardian, El Pais…) and bring together journalists, developers and designers for a two-day competition to develop innovative news prototypes.

Throughout the second season of the Editors Lab programme, the Global Editors Network has organized 17 national Hackdays all over the world. Each winning team has been invited to take part in the Hackdays Final, ’The World Cup of Newsroom Innovation’, that took place during the GEN Summit 2014 in Barcelona. The winning teams competed during two days to win the title of Editors Lab World Champion.

And the Winner is...

The Times, with 'Moments', a service that will integrate videos and text in the screen second to second. User will look over an article and a video will be playing ajusted for a group of words. User will be able to play back and bring to specific points of the text. The way that they will manage is with hierarchy signes.

In second place, Financial Times. They try to make better the viewing time of the user showing the exciting points of the video. With this tool, trying to "cut the chase", users will be able to skip the intro and go to the part that other used have found interesting, for example. For a journalist is the perfect tool to know which content has liked their readers and where are the points where the newsroom should improve. It is a crowd-sourcing project as users vote which part is interesting with thumbs up or down. To see their project, please click here

In third place, Wirtualna Polska, with 'Daily Carrot'. They think that their mobile app is "fresh" and "healthy". It engages users in real time for report topical issues and also make a quick review. It is the way to "put user in front of the news", says member of Wirtualna Polska.

The Essentials

The Theme: Making the Most of Video

From live streaming to video aggregation, short news clips to documentary storytelling... the options for digital news videos are rapidly growing as are the opportunities.

-  Video, audio, images, and text are difficult to harmonize. How can we reconcile them to create new forms of storytelling?

- Digital videos are more and more consumed on mobile devices. How can Newsrooms optimize their video content for a more engaged user experience?

- User-generated video content is booming. How can Newsrooms take advantage of it, in particular around real-time events and breaking news situations?
