GEN Summit 2016 – The Rise of Platform-Driven News

Over 600 editors and media experts started discussions today on the future for digital journalism at the 2016 Global Editors Network (GEN) Summit in Vienna.

The theme of this year’s three-day summit is “The Rise of Platform-Driven News“ with over 80 speakers tackling problems facing the modern newsroom, from virtual reality (VR) to coping with ad blockers.

“Just try and get after the challenges”

Peter Bale, President of GEN, told delegates: “We try not to complain about the challenges, we just try and get after them.“ Bertrand Pecquerie, CEO of GEN added: “If you are here, you will feel a lot of energy, a lot of emotion and a lot of positive feelings, so we are convinced we can find solutions.”

As well as discussions on emerging media innovations, the final leg of the Editors Lab “hackathon” kicked off. Ten teams from around the world battle it out to find the winning idea for newsgaming.
Exhibitors include Russia Today, BBC, Storyful, Google, SMART news and JYC. A Virtual Reality Studio has opened for participants to try out along with 360-degree videos.
