Tony Gallagher began his career at the press agency South West News, before going to the Daily Mail where he was at the forefront of a number of big stories. He was the Mail's news editor for six years before being made the paper's assistant editor. He was put in charge of its website in 2006 shortly before resigning to join the Daily Telegraph as executive head of news. He was made deputy editor in 2007 and played an important part in the famous MPs’ expenses stories. In 2009 he was promoted to editor.
