On 24-25 February, GEN and Gruppo L'Espresso, with the support of the Google News Lab, gathered some of the best Italian media innovators in Rome for an Editors Lab focused on crisis and disaster reporting. With increased seismic activity in the region, this hackathon marked the six-month anniversary of the August 2016 Central Italy earthquake.
The winning team was the team from La Stampa, with their project: News Light
Special mentions were awarded to the teams from La Repubblica and Rai News.
Public's choice went to Rai News' project.
All the projects developed during the Editors Lab in Rome are listed here.
Theme: Crisis and disaster reporting
How can newsrooms cover disasters accurately and effectively? How can news and humanitarian organisations collaborate with government to help prevent casualties in a crisis situation? What role does prevention and education play in the reporting process? What innovations can teams bring to existing mobile and crowdsourcing tools to improve them? Can these tools serve newsrooms in the event of other types of emergencies (i.e. terrorist attacks)?
