Media Indaba Editors Lab

Prototyping the Future of News in Cape Town

21 November 2017 - 22 November 2017

On 21-22 November, GEN and Code for Africa, with the support of the Google News Lab,  gathered some of the best South African media innovators at Media Indaba in Cape Town for a hackathon to develop news prototypes. The theme was: 'Minsinformation: The war on truth'.

The winning team earned a spot in the two-day Editors Lab Final in May 2018 in Lisbon, Portugal. The winning team in Cape Town will have the opportunity to compete against peers from around the world on a truly global stage at the GEN Summit

The winning team was Eyewitness News, with their prototype: Ukweli: Dropping truth bombs on dark social.

Special mentions were awarded to the TISOBlackstar team from the Sunday Times, and The Conversation, for LookLIVE, and to the Media Monitoring Africa for ReaList.

The theme: Misinformation, the war on truth

South Africa is moving towards a potential political tipping point with mounting divisions, opaque nuclear deals being forged with Russia, and shocking revelations around state capture. The media needs new ways to sustain our democracy and fight back in the 'war on truth'.

Code for Africa and the Global Editors Network, with the support of the Google News Lab, will help newsrooms build creative solutions to the crisis at the country’s second Editors Lab, in Cape Town.

Come join us to build bots, investigative technologies, or other digital innovations ahead of Media Indaba Africa.
