With 17 Hackdays, the season 2 (2013-2014) of the Editors Lab programme was a great success. The programme has constantly grown in popularity and qualilty. It has been the starting point of innovative and meaningful projects and has attracted amazing newsrooms and partners.

The best German media gathered at Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in Berlin to develop innovative journalism prototypes. This Hackdays theme was : Data Protection. The teams were encouraged to explore innovative methods to visualize digital footprints and develop new tools to protect data privacy.

GEN, BBC Connected Studio & BBC News Labs gathered the best Irish, Scottish and English newsrooms in Glasgow and Dublin simultaneously. This Hackdays theme was ‘The Future of News Curation’: How might we curate and connect our News Storytelling, in the age after “the stream”?

On 1 - 2 April, Gazeta Wyborcza hosted the GEN Editors Lab Gazeta Wyborcza Hackdays in Poland for the first time. Teams created new tools around the theme: ‘News storytelling : in real-time, in multi-media and on mobile’.

Teams representing the best newsrooms from New York gathered at The New York Times to develop innovative journalism tools about the following topic: ‘News as a conversation’. Exploring innovating methods to discover and visualize stories buried in news-related data that engage audiences, invite user interactions and encourage collaboration across the newsroom. Think breaking news, specific events (elections) and opinion polls.
Al-Masry Al-Youm Hackdays - Cairo
18 - 19 March
Teams representing the best Egyptian newsrooms will gather in Al-Masry Al-Youm's newsroon in Cairo, to develop innovative journalism tools about the following topic: ‘Traffic in Cairo. Rethinking ways to create up-to-date and user-friendly traffic maps and making effective use of real-time crowdsourcing in order to help drivers find the fastest routes’.

Editors Lab - VRT Hackdays, Brussels

The VRT in Brussels, Belgium was the latest newsroom to host the Editors Lab Hackdays, organized by the Global Editors Network with support from Google. The two-day Editors Lab Hackday saw the RTBF, NOS, Mediafin, MIX, VMMA, MO, and VRT compete to build the most innovative news-driven mobile app, or digital content, around the theme: New Tools for the newsroom of the future.
Editors Lab Ria Novosti Hackdays, Moscow

The hackdays, held at the RIA’s International Multimedia Press Center on the 10th and 11th of November, gathered representatives of national and regional Russian media organizations to compete under the theme “Big Data: Turning Data into Stories to Drive Regional Readership”. BG won the contest with a stunning mapping app of Moscow, and Tatar Inform and Moscow News received honorable mentions from the jury.

WSJ/Marketwatch won the Editors Lab Hackdays organized by the Global Editors Network, and Yahoo!News with a great live ticker app. The teams from UC Berkeley, The Huffington Post and Yahoo! News received honorable mentions from the jury.
Editors Lab - Le Parisien Hackdays, Paris

The Global Editors Network was back to Paris to have the French media hack urban public data, during the Editors Lab hosted by Le Parisien with support from Google. Nine teams representing some of the biggest French newsrooms competed in the development of data journalism content under the topic: Paris Data, new personalized and geolocalized news services based on urban data. Radio France won, and the jury's two special mentions went to teams: Le Parisien and Le Monde.
Editors Lab - L'Espresso Hackdays, Rome

Eight teams worked hard over two days to find ways to reinvent the coverage of politics in Italy. They produced projects and apps focusing on the interaction with the users, data visualization, fact checking, news gaming and new forms of storytelling. One major interest emerged among the teams: the analysis of the users political opinions. How can news outlets gather, analyze, and visualize data about their readers' political profiles?

The Times of London won the GEN Guardian Hackdays, which took place on 26-27 September 2013 at The Guardian headquarters and were supported by Google. The Times' project, the "Times Thermometer", is designed to filter comments based on sentiment to give an indication of what Times readers think and feel about a particular issue.
