As social networking has accelerated the speed at which readers are bombarded by scraps of information on unfolding news events - some true, some false; some useful, some confusing - the role of the journalist writing live blogs for news sites needs to change. Just a few years ago, simply posting short, factual updates on breaking news developments was all that was needed. Now,  readers inundated with reports and rumors need trusted news organizations to help fact-check information in real time and provide background, history and other information to put the unfolding events into context. The best live blogs now mix factual updates with rapid reaction news analysis.
