Throughout the sixth season of the Editors Lab programme, the Global Editors Network will run hackathons in the best newsrooms of the five continents. This new season started in October 2017 in Lisbon, Portugal. It will conclude in the same city in June 2018 at the Editors Lab Final which will gather the winning teams of each regional hackathon for a final competition at the GEN Summit 2018.
Editors Lab Final
From 29 May to 1 June 2018, winning teams from all corners of the world gathered in Lisbon for the culmination of the sixth season of Editors Lab to compete in a three-day hackathon at the GEN Summit 2018. The Editors Lab Final 2018, gathers top teams representing South Africa, Spain, Romania, Australia, Indonesia, Brazil, South Korea, Japan, Portgual, Nigeria, and Lebanon — one of them took home the title of Editors Lab World Champion.
Beirut Editors Lab
On 27-28 April 2018, the Global Editors Network (GEN) and the International Centre for Journalists (ICFJ) and IJNet Arabic, with the support of the Google News Lab, gathered some of the best Lebanese media innovators at Flat6Labs in Beirut to develop innovative journalism prototypes. The participants devised new ways to hold powers accountable for their actions and promises.
Globo Editors Lab
On 7-8 April 2018, the Global Editors Network (GEN) and Globo Lab with the support of the Google News Lab, gathered some of the best Brazilian media innovators in São Paulo to develop innovative journalism prototypes. The participants had to devise new ways to fight against misinformation, disinformation, and the bots that spread them.
Bucharest Editors Lab
On 23-24 March 2018, the Center for Independent Journalism and GEN, with the support of Google News Lab, gathered some of the best Romanian media innovators in Bucharest to develop innovative news prototypes. The challenge for the participants was to find new ways to hold political powers accountable for its actions and promises.
