Disaster reporting

On 20-21 May 2017, the Global Editors Network (GEN) and ONA Japan with the support of the Google News Lab, gathered some of the best Japanse media innovators in Tokyo to develop innovative journalism prototypes. 

Teams from Buzzfeed Japan, Fuji Television Network, Inc., Jolf, Newspicks, NHK, Nikkei Inc, Nippon Broadcasting System, Inc, The Asahi Shimbun Company, The Yomiuri Shimbun and Yahoo Japan participated in the hackathon. 

A team from Buzzfeed Japan and Yahoo! Japan won the competition with their prototype TasKAL.

Special mentions were awarded to the teams of Yahoo! Japan and Nippon Broadcasting System.

The Theme

The theme of the hackathon was "disaster reporting".

This Editors Lab was part of a series of hackathons focusing on disaster reporting. The first one took place in Manila in July 2016 and the second one in Rome in February 2017.
